For more than a decade, the direction of travel in engineering education seemed settled: courses moved online, conferences became livestreams, and onboarding turned into a playlist. The convenience was undeniable, and it opened skills such as cloud operations and machine learning engineering to people who could never have travelled to a classroom. Yet across consulting engagements, internal academies and community events, a pattern is emerging. Teams are rediscovering that certain skills, especially those involving live systems and messy data, are learned faster and retained longer when people practise them together in a room.

Below we trace the forces behind the change, the areas where it shows up most clearly, and what it means for organisations planning their training over the next few years. We avoid hard numbers deliberately; the point is to describe a direction that practitioners recognise, not to inflate it.

The state of in-person tech training today

The current picture is best described as hybrid with a stronger physical core. Most learning still starts online. Engineers watch introductory material, read documentation and complete self-paced modules. What has changed is the role of live sessions. Rather than being an optional extra, hands-on workshops, lab days and in-person bootcamps are increasingly treated as the moment where skill is actually tested and consolidated.

Several formats are gaining ground:

Lab-first workshops, where participants spend most of the time operating real or realistic environments rather than listening.

Incident simulations, in which a team diagnoses and resolves a staged outage under time pressure.

Model-building sprints, where data scientists and engineers take a model from notebook to deployed service in a single focused session.

Community meetups with live demos, often hosted by local user groups and companies, where presenters show systems running rather than slides describing them.

Why the pendulum is swinging back

Complexity outgrew the tutorial format

Modern delivery stacks combine containers, orchestration, pipelines, observability tooling and, increasingly, machine learning components. Each piece can be learned in isolation from a video. The hard part is how they interact under stress, and that is where recorded content struggles. A presenter cannot anticipate every misconfiguration a viewer might create. A facilitator in the room can respond to whatever actually happens. Our guide to practical AIOps training for IT teams makes a similar observation: the value lies in working through real operational data, not just understanding concepts.

Completion is not competence

Organisations that invested heavily in online learning platforms have often found a gap between course completion and on-the-job performance. Engineers pass assessments yet hesitate during real incidents. This is not a criticism of online courses; it reflects the difference between recognising a correct answer and producing one under uncertainty. Hands-on sessions narrow that gap because they demand production rather than recognition.

Machine learning raises the stakes

MLOps work involves data quality, reproducibility, model monitoring and deployment, all of which are fiddly in practice. Teams following the kind of progression outlined in our MLOps roadmap for data scientists and engineers often find that the jump from notebook to production is where they need the most help. That jump is learned best by doing it, with someone experienced nearby to explain why a pipeline is failing or why a model drifted.

Distributed teams miss shared context

Remote and hybrid work has many benefits, but it can thin out the informal learning that used to happen at neighbouring desks. In-person training days have become one of the few times colleagues watch each other solve problems in real time. That shared experience builds a common vocabulary and a sense of how the team reasons, which pays off in later collaboration.

A day in a lab versus a week of videos

Consider two engineers preparing to support a new deployment platform. The first spends a week working through a well-reviewed online course, pausing to take notes and passing every quiz. The second spends a single day in a facilitated lab, where the platform is deliberately misbehaving and the job is to make it healthy again. When both are later paged for a real fault, the difference is usually visible within minutes. The first engineer knows the vocabulary and searches for the right page in the documentation. The second has already felt the sequence of checks in their fingers: which dashboard to open, which log to tail, which command to try before escalating.

Neither path is wrong, and the best outcome combines both. But the comparison explains why training leads keep returning to physical sessions. They convert familiarity into reflex, and reflex is what matters when a service is down and customers are waiting. It also explains why the comeback is concentrated in operational roles rather than spread evenly across every discipline.

Where the trend is strongest

The renewed interest in physical sessions is not uniform. It appears most clearly in a few areas.

Operations and reliability work. Incident response, on-call readiness and recovery skills benefit enormously from simulation.

Security practice. Capture-the-flag events and red-team exercises are inherently hands-on and collaborative.

Data and model engineering. Moving from experimentation to dependable services is where many teams stall.

Onboarding. New joiners who spend early days in a lab with experienced colleagues tend to settle faster than those handed a reading list.

Our earlier article on artificial intelligence changing the day-to-day work of DevOps and SRE teams argues that as tooling grows more capable, engineers need stronger judgement, not less, which further favours experiential learning.

What this does not mean

It would be a mistake to read this as a rejection of online learning. The more accurate picture is a division of labour. Recorded content remains excellent for fundamentals, reference and revision. It scales cheaply and lets people learn at their own pace. Live, in-person sessions are best used for the expensive, high-value moments: practising under pressure, getting corrected, and building relationships across teams. The most effective programmes deliberately combine both, using online modules to prepare and live labs to prove.

Implications for teams and training leads

Budget for physical sessions explicitly. Treat lab days and workshop attendance as core training spend, not a perk.

Design around doing. Any live session that is mostly slides could have been a video. Reserve in-person time for hands-on work.

Use the wider ecosystem. External meetups and community workshops expose engineers to other organisations’ approaches. In Bengaluru, a city event site such as Bangalore Orbit, which lists tech, developer and startup events alongside workshops, helps staff spot relevant sessions without much effort.

Measure behaviour, not attendance. Track whether people can perform the target task afterwards, ideally through a follow-up exercise within a few weeks.

Mix seniority deliberately. Pairing experienced engineers with newer colleagues spreads tacit knowledge that rarely gets written down.

Looking ahead

As infrastructure becomes more abstract and automated, there is a temptation to assume engineers need less hands-on familiarity with what lies underneath. Practitioners tend to argue the opposite. When automation fails, someone still has to understand the system well enough to intervene. That understanding is built through first-hand contact: running, breaking and repairing real environments, ideally alongside others who have done it before.

The likely future is not a return to classroom-only training, nor a fully virtual one. It is a deliberate blend in which screens carry the knowledge and rooms carry the practice. Teams that design for both will develop engineers who are not only well informed but also genuinely capable when it counts.

Online courses carry the knowledge, but hands-on labs and live workshops are regaining ground as the place where DevOps and MLOps skill is really built.

[147

post-11762","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-devops
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
