This comparison answers it engine by engine, no vendor theatre. The frame of reference is DataSecOps — Satori Cyber’s 2021 label for an agile, security-embedded operating style for data, still a vendor coinage rather than a ratified standard — whose core requirement is simple: rules must apply at query time, to rows, columns and queries, wherever the data is read. So the question for each engine is what it actually delivers against that bar.

The field at a glance

Six platforms cover most estates: Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks with Unity Catalog, AWS Lake Formation, PostgreSQL, and the Hadoop-family guard dog Apache Ranger. Two of them charge for their controls; one keeps them deliberately minimal; two are free but demand discipline. Before the detail, one shared caveat: whatever you choose, a plain copy of a table or a CREATE OR REPLACE rebuild arrives without the tags and policies the original carried, so version your protection checks the way you version schemas.

Snowflake: complete but gated

Snowflake offers the fullest native set — dynamic masking, row access policies, and object tagging with classification — but gates them behind the Enterprise edition and above, so the tier on your invoice decides whether the conversation even starts. The design is tag-centric: attach a masking policy to a tag, tag the columns, and protection follows the classification rather than the object name. Password-only human sign-ins are being phased out across 2026, so multifactor is becoming a baseline assumption rather than an option. Within the comparison, Snowflake scores highest on integration depth and lowest on pricing flexibility: the controls are excellent, and they are also the reason many teams find themselves on a higher tier than they planned.

BigQuery: strong DataSecOps tags, taxed planner

Google’s approach centres on policy tags attached to columns, with taxonomy enforced at query time, plus row-level access policies for record filtering. Two engineering costs matter when comparing. Row-level policies there disable the pruning that normally keeps large scans cheap, so a protected table can pay a real latency bill; and a WRITE_TRUNCATE job — the common pattern for rebuilds — resets the tags on the table it overwrites. Teams running hourly truncate-and-load pipelines therefore need tag restoration in the pipeline itself, not just in documentation. BigQuery suits organisations already deep in the Google stack whose protection requirements tolerate the planner tax.

Databricks and Lake Formation: the young pair

Databricks routes governance through Unity Catalog, whose attribute-based access control tags let policies key off classification — a modern design, though parts of the ABAC surface still carry Beta status, which matters for change management more than capability. AWS Lake Formation takes a narrower posture: its strength is read-path filtering (column and row control for readers), while write-side governance stays lighter. If your workload is analytics-heavy — dashboards, notebooks, BI reads — both cover the ground; if you need symmetrical write-time enforcement, plan gaps explicitly rather than discovering them in an incident review.

PostgreSQL and Ranger: the free veterans

Row-level security has been part of PostgreSQL since the 9.5 release of January 2016 — the oldest mechanism on this list and still the reference implementation many engineers learned on. Its famous sharp edge: referential-integrity checks run with constraints bypassing RLS, so an unprivileged user can sometimes probe another row’s existence through a foreign-key error — a covert channel worth knowing in threat modelling rather than panicking about. Apache Ranger, guarding the Hadoop ecosystem, has carried row filters and column masking since its 0.6 release, making it the veteran of federated policy enforcement across Hive, HDFS and friends. Both cost nothing in licensing and much in operational care.

The overlay verdict

Then there is the buy-it-once option: Immuta, Privacera and Commvault’s Satori line sit above the engines, translating one policy corpus into each platform’s native tongue and issuing one audit report. For multi-engine estates the administrative saving is real. The no-nonsense caveat is equally real: an overlay is a proxy, and proxies have bypass paths — direct connections, account-to-account shares, and table clones can all skip past the enforcement point unless the native controls underneath are switched on too. Our comparison verdict: treat the overlay as the authoring plane and the engine as the enforcement plane; buying the former does not excuse configuring the latter.

Running the DataSecOps comparison in your own estate

Vendor scorecards age; a pilot against your own workload does not. Pick two tables — one genuinely sensitive, one voluminous — and score each candidate control on five questions. Does it apply at query time, in every tool we use? Do the tags survive a clone and a rebuild, or does protection evaporate on copy? What does it cost in tier upgrades, planner latency, or pipeline rework? Does it emit evidence an auditor accepts without translation? And which read paths bypass it entirely? The last question eliminates more products than the first four combined, because a control that three tools skip is a control you do not have.

Scorecard

Snowflake — deepest native integration; Enterprise tier required; tag-centric policy design.

BigQuery — policy tags plus row policies; planner tax and WRITE_TRUNCATE tag loss to engineer around.

Databricks — Unity Catalog ABAC tags; partial Beta status; strong for lakehouse analytics.

Lake Formation — read-path filtering strength; lighter write-side governance.

PostgreSQL — mature RLS since 2016; referential-integrity covert channel to model.

Ranger — row filters and masking since 0.6 across the Hadoop family; operational care required.

Overlays — one rule set, many engines, one report; never a substitute for native enforcement underneath.

Whichever column wins your evaluation, the enforcement bar stays identical: query-time application, row and column granularity, and evidence that survives an audit. Engines differ in where they set that bar by default; overlays differ in how far above it they lift every engine at once; and your estate decides which gap matters more.
